Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence startup, XAI, has filed a federal court in Texas against Apple and Openai, accusing them of conspiring to avoid fair competition in the AI market, Reuters reported.
The complaint claims that Apple and OpenAi have “locked the markets to maintain their monopolies and prevent innovators such as X and XAI to compete.”
He states that the Apple Association with OpenAI, which integrated chatgpt into iPhones, iPads and Macs, has unfairly inclined the market.
“If it weren’t for its exclusive agreement with Openai, Apple would have no reason to refrain from presenting the X application and the Grok application in its App Store,” the lawsuit said.
XAI looks for billions of dollars in damages. An Operai spokesman replied that “this last presentation is consistent with Musk’s continuous harassment pattern.” Apple did not comment immediately.
Musk had warned at the beginning of this month that Apple’s behavior “makes it impossible for any AI company to also reach #1 in the App Store.”
Antitrust experts say the case could be fundamental. Apple dominates the smartphone market, and its exclusive agreement with Openai can strengthen XAI’s claims.
But legal scholars pointed out that Apple can argue that it acted in a competitive environment and has no duty to boost their rivals.
The lawsuit could become the first in the United States courts in defining the scope of the AI market.
Christine Bartholomew, a law professor at the University of Buffalo, said: “She is a canary in the coal mine in terms of how the courts will deal with AI and treat the antimonopoly and AI.”
