- The buffalo skeleton hard drive converts file storage into living, in art motion
- Do you want to see your data read in real time? This unit visually delivers it
- Not only storage is a show: only 50 units available
To commemorate its 50th anniversary, Buffalo has introduced an external HDD special edition called Skeleton Hard Disk (HD-SKL). This impulse reinvents the company’s skeleton model of the company and offers a rare look at a hard drive in action, something that even the best SSD options cannot provide.
Through their transparent window, users can see the movement of the magnetic head while reading and writes data, improved by a complementary Windows application called “Seekwizard.”
The software allows the impulse to perform demonstration search patterns, such as sequential and random search, transforming HDD into a visual sample of mechanical data recovery.
A special edition to bring memories
Founded in 1975 by Makoto Maki, Buffalo celebrates its evolution of a company focused on the audio to an important player in PC peripherals. Its original skeleton hard drive, released in 1998, had a capacity of 4.3 GB and had transparent coverage.
The 2025 special edition is limited to only 50 units, and although the design nostalgia, the HD-SKL presents a high-end aluminum chassis, ground and anodized with precision in matte black, echoing the style of the buffalo of the transmission player 3533 launched in the late 1970s.
Inside, the HD-SKL offers 4TB of storage and connects through USB 3.2 Gen 1, with compatibility with respect to USB 2.0. It is also compatible with the micro-b port.
The unit is preformed in EXFAT for a wide support of the operating system, although USB-C users must supply their own adapter.
With a weight of around 1.5 kg and measuring 126 × 185 × 115 mm, it is more bulky than today’s elegant portable SSD, but its appeal is clearly different.
The product is scheduled to send in June 2025 to 100,000 yen (around $ 688) after a sale -based sale that ends on May 25.
