Last month I ran a poll asking you, dear TechRadar readers, what your favorite controller of all time was. I included almost every first-party controller with joysticks I could think of, dating back to the Nintendo 64.
I expected, like any gamer worth their salt, to see the latest Xbox wireless controller, the DualSense wireless controller or perhaps the DualShock 4, topping the list. But that didn’t happen.
Rather, the original Valve Steam Controller was voted readers’ favorite controller of all time… yes, really. It obtained 15% of the votes, placing it in first place, while the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller took second place with 13%; An older controller but fantastic for the time and many years later.
So those are the results that the survey ended up discarding. But here’s the thing: I don’t believe it.
Maybe it was because I titled the article with the Steam Machine controller, so it appealed to die-hard Steam fans. Or maybe you thought I was referring to the controller built into the Steam Deck… or many of you are just trolling me.
I like what Valve tried to do with the original Steam Controller, but I just can’t believe people are thinking about the strange trackpad and gamepad design they created for people’s favorite controller of all time.
Maybe I should have asked you what you think is the best controller of all time, instead of the favorite, since they can be different things.
So while I try to create a new potentially troll-proof poll, why don’t you hit up the comments and tell me, honestly, what your favorite controller of all time is and which of the big players has the best controller right now?
