Muzaffrabad: at least ten people, including women and children, died on Thursday when heavy rains caused sudden floods and landslides in Gilgit-Baltistan and parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), authorities said.

In AJK, the Government announced the closure of public and private schools on August 15 and 16 due to continuous heavy rains and the risk of landslides.

A day before, the Pakistan Meteorology Department (PMD) had warned about the intensification of the monsoon activity with a more widespread rain, the wind and the shortages expected in several parts of the country from next week.

According to the prognosis, Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmira (AJK), the Upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Gilgit-Baltistan will probably receive Rain/Thundershowers wind with heavy scattered failures from August 14 to 17.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, eight people died and two other wounds in the Ghizer district, said GB government spokesman Faizullah Firaq, added that a brother and a sister died and two others suffered wounds in the Diamer district.

He said that several roads damaged by floods are being repaired, adding that the key routes, including the Babusar road, had been restored on the Loshi Point and Karakoram highway in Gandlu Point. “

Relief operations are ongoing in the areas affected by floods, he said.

In Athmuqam, the debris of landslides were clear on the Neelum Valley road in Barian Seri, restoring access, the local police said.

In Chilas, the water flow in the Indo River rose in Soniwal Kot, a town located at the crossing of the Indo River and Thurnala, flooding nearby settlements and damaging several houses, local residents said.

In Muzaffrabad, AJK’s Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwar Ul Haq, presided over a meeting of the State Disaster Authority (SDMA) and ordered the relocation of residents who live along the rivers to safer places.

During the meeting, the prime minister also approved financial assistance for families affected by the rain and ordered that the house be provided with those whose houses were destroyed.

Prime Minister Haq issued orders to take measures for the protection of residents along the Jhelum River in Hattian Bala.

He addressed the authorities to evaluate damage to the energy infrastructure in Jhelum, Neelum and Bagh, and told the electricity department to present a detailed report.

The prime minister also ordered the establishment of emergency control points to monitor water resources. The meeting that presided also agreed to launch an operation to eliminate invasions along Riverbanks.

In the Neelum district, two bridges in Kutten and three link bridges on the Lawat current were dragged by floods, according to the SDMA.

The SDMA said that several tourists remain stranded in the base camp of Ratti Gali. The partial energy supply has been restored from the Noseri grid station, according to the Sikandar Khan engineer.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Information, Mazhar Saeed, who speaks in a video message from the tourist place of Ratti Gali in Neelum Valley, said that more than 700 tourists, including more than 300 women and children, were stranded after a cloud account dragged road sections.

Due to the bad weather, he said, the authorities have prevented tourists from leaving the area and having organized free accommodation with the help of local residents.

Any decision on the departure of the tourists of Ratti Gali will be taken this morning once the weather wakes up, he said.

The PMD has warned the possible sudden floods in local currents and nullahs in KP, Punjab, Islamabad, Murree, Galliyat and Ajk from August 15 to 21, and in the torrents of Hill de DG Khan and the east of Baluchistan from August 18 to 21.

Urban floods are possible in low areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Peshawar and Nowshera, said the MET office.

Earth landslides and landslides can alter roads in mountainous regions, while wind storms and rays could damage weak structures, electrical posts, advertising fences and vehicles.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert for the seventh monzónic rain spell from August 13 to 15, warning strong showers in Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore and Dera Ghazi Khan.

Heavy downpours are also forecast on the higher scopes of the Indo, Chenab, Sutlej, Jhelum and Ravi rivers.
