- As of August 21, the price of all PlayStation 5 consoles is increasing by $ 50
- The standard PS5 will be $ 549.99, while the PS5 pro jumps at $ 749.99
- PS5 accessories, and consoles in other regions, remain unchanged
Sony has announced that the recommended retail price of PlayStation 5 in the United States will increase.
In a publication in the official PlayStation blog, the manufacturer affirms that “a challenging economic environment” has led to the “difficult decision” to increase the price of all PS5 consoles by $ 50.
That means that, as of August 21, the price of the standard PS5 console will increase from $ 499.99 to $ 549.99. The cheapest PS5 digital edition will also see a jump from $ 449.99 to $ 499.99. Finally, the PS5 Pro Premium will jump from $ 699.99 to $ 749.99 – Yikes.
In a single positive news in the midst of all sadness, Sony confirmed that the price of PlayStation 5 accessories will remain unchanged. Therefore, everything from the Dualsense controller to the vertical support, will not be more expensive and will remain at the current price.
If it was not clear enough what is the reasoning behind these price increases, Sony has added a final grade to the update, stating that it has no other price changes to announce for other markets. These price increases are only for the US. And it is almost certain that they are due to the in progress caused by US tariffs.
Sony is not the only manufacturer of the play console that announces price increases in the United States this month. At the beginning of August, Nintendo also increased the price of several Switch consoles up to $ 50. These increases applied to the original Nintendo switch, the LITE switch and the OLED switch. The last Nintendo Switch 2 remained intact, but some of the new console accessories received smaller price increases.
Of course, retailers have some margin about whether to go with the new prices for tomorrow’s PS5 consoles, but given how many immediately responded to Nintendo Switch price changes, I would not be surprised if everyone is implemented sooner rather than later. That means you buy now if you want to ensure savings, since it is likely that they are only the same prices that we see that Black Friday now returns.
We approach five years from the launch date of the original PS5, and although the price has fluctuated in many regions, a general increase like this is unheard of so late in the life cycle of a console. Most of us expect the oldest consoles to become cheaper, no more expensive, especially offers hunters like me that always try to find the best offers for the most sought after technology. These are unusual times.
