PML-N, PPP to compete together with the next by-polls

The Peoples Party (PPP) of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) and the Peoples Party (PPP) announced that they would play the next partial elections under a joint strategy, agreeing not to present candidates with each other.

The announcement occurred after a meeting held at the residence of the main leader of PPP and former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf. The PML-N delegation included Federal Minister Hanif Abbasi and Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, while the PPP was represented by former Prime Minister Ashraf and Nayyar Hussain Bukhari.

At a joint press conference after the meeting, both parties confirmed that they would cooperate in the partial elections, based on a seat adjustment formula in electoral terms.

“Our leadership has directed us to work together for these partial elections,” Raja Pervez Ashraf told journalists. “The agreement is that any part that was second in a particular constituency during the general elections will obtain the support of the other.”

Hanif Abbasi echoed the message of unity and reiterated the strength of the alliance. “We are partners of coalition in the National Assembly, the Senate and the provincial legislatures. This association will now extend to the partial roads. Together, we will achieve victory,” he said.

When reaffirming their commitment, the leaders indicated that the past partial elections were disputed under the same understanding. “We have already played partial elections under this formula and we will continue to do so,” said Abbasi.

The agreement occurs after several rounds of conversations between PPP and PML-N leaders in recent months. The two parties have been working to guarantee softer agreements to share power in Punjab and to maintain political stability nationwide.

Previously, the president of the PPP, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, had met with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to express the reserves of his party. After the meeting, the Premier assured the PPP to approach its concerns and promised continuous cooperation.

The PPP, in return, reaffirmed its full support for the government’s economic rebirth plans under the leadership of the prime minister.
