The Coco Gound race at the US 2025 Open is over, and it was Naomi Osaka, the Japanese star who won the tournament in 2018 and 2020, who made it possible.

Osaka, who defeated Serena Williams to capture the title in 2018, was playing as she has done in the past to reach the top of the female singles classification, defeating the almofera dominantly, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals in Flushing, New York.

The female individual player number 23 had a roaring start, breaking the gago in the opening game and continuing rolling from there.

Gounds fought to break Osaka herself, since the latter never faced a break point in her service throughout the game. Gonff finished the game with 33 uninforced errors, which finally put it in a routine that Osaka took advantage of.

“He was super locked,” Osaka said on the court after his game. “I felt that everyone wanted to see a great game and I hope that is what you have.”

This is Osaka’s first trip to the quarterfinals in a Grand Slam since he won the Australian Open in 2021. He has dealt with mental health struggles in the past, bravely speaking about them while taking a break from sport as a result.

Osaka also gave birth to his daughter, Shai, in 2023, which led to an absence of the court.

Osaka went to the crowd on Monday, saying that he was trying not to cry for how much he loves to play in front of them.

“Honestly, I have a lot of fun here. I was telling everyone, literally, I was here in the stands two months after giving birth to my daughter and I was seeing Coco. I really wanted an opportunity to come here and play. This is my favorite court in the world and means a lot to return here.”

Osaka and Gound share a friendship even when they are in boxes with each other on the court. But it is Osaka moving to face No. 11 karolĂna much in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
