UNITED NATIONS:
The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, has expressed his pain for devastating floods in Pakistan who have killed hundreds of people and displaced more than one million.
“The general secretary is deeply saddened by recent floods in northern Pakistan, which, according to reports, have charged more than 400 lives,” said spokesman Stephane Dujarric in a statement.
The disaster, caused by a “severe monsoon exacerbated by climate change,” has affected about 1.5 million people, leaving hundreds of thousands of humanitarian aid, according to the statement.
In addition, he noted that “more than 3,000 homes, more than 400 schools and about 40 health centers have been damaged.”
The UN chief praised Pakistan’s response efforts, adding that “Pakistani authorities praise for relocating more than one million people in Punjab.”
“Also expresses his solidarity with the government and the people of Pakistan, extends his sincere condolence to the families of those who have lost their lives and wishes a quick recovery to those who have been injured.”
The statement said that the UN and its partners are “working closely with the Pakistani authorities to quickly evaluate the humanitarian impact of floods, identify the needs and address the gaps in the response.”
He added that “the emergency relief coordinator, Tom Fletcher, has launched $ 600,000 of the regional humanitarian group to support help and recovery efforts, and discussions are being carried out with the government in a response plan.”
