- Apple event day has arrived, and we are still looking
- Apple has been playing with the idea of developing an intelligent ring from the beginning since 2020, but its current state is unknown
- While we do not expect Apple’s ring to appear in the Apple event, it would be the biggest surprise of the day if I did
One of the biggest events in Technology has arrived: the September Apple event. Of course, the iPhone 17 series will be the star of the program, but it is the persistent anticipation of the new Apple watches that makes this event even more exciting.
When it comes to wearables, Apple has nailed it with the smart watch, and at least it is contemplated by making an intelligent ring: we know it due to the presentations of patents and other leaks, which suggests that it came quite far in the process. If Apple continued with the new form factor, it would face a tough competition with the best smart rings, namely the Samsung Galaxy ring.
In recent years, rumors about the state of Apple’s first smart ring have been floating, and with only a few hours for the Apple event, a surprise appearance of Apple’s ring would be the best microphone drop. But is it unreasonable to expect a new category of laptops today?
The story until now
Apple has been exploring the idea of developing an intelligent ring for some years, after having presented patents for an intelligent ring in 2020. In September 2024, Apple issued an Apple Watch survey quite subtle, asking Apple Watch’s existing users if they would consider another laptop.
The exaggeration was killed as no more updates were followed, but a leak resurrected our hope for Apple’s ring, sharing that development still advanced, in addition to going beyond with ‘attempts to develop portable devices in the form of bands and smart glasses’.
Many of these types of R&D projects never see daylight, so we despise these reports, until Mark Gurman of Bloomberg revealed Apple’s plans to eliminate his smart ring project for concern that he was caught by the popular Apple Watch, sharing that Apple “has no motifs to cannibalize a product that still has space to grow and is the envy of the physical fitness industry.”
Is our first look today’s Apple event?
To put it frankly, we don’t know it, but it is very unlikely. As is, it seems that the plans for the development of Apple’s first smart ring progressed beyond experimentation, but now they have stopped.
We would not totally rule out the Apple company in the smart rings given the success of Samsung’s flagship ring and the Oura 4 ring, but it is still early, and it is ambitious to expect it to appear during the Apple event today. But we will know with certainty once the key note takes off.
