In the midst of all the fanfare around the air of Super Delgado iPhone and the iPhone 17 Pro of all banks, it is easy to think about the standard iPhone 17 such as the ugly duckling of this year’s iPhone line. But for my money, Apple’s latest model is the best value iPhone for some time.
Of course, it looks almost identical to the iPhone 16 in the images, but this is a larger and better device that is as close to the pro models as any entry level iPhone.
To start, there is the long -awaited screen update (and frankly very long and long). Before the launch event this week, I wrote that I would recommend the iPhone 17 on the iPhone 17 Pro if you obtained an update rate of 120 Hz, and Apple has delivered that application and something else.
The iPhone 17 not only has an update rate of 120 Hz, but also obtains the complete promotion visualization technology of Apple, which dynamically adjusts that update speed between 1-20Hz, depending on what happens on the screen. This helps preserve the battery life of the phone and allows an always on the screen, while the complete 120Hz rate will result in a much softer displacement experience in front of the iPhone 16.
As a reminder, the update rate refers to the number of times per second that your phone can show a new image. The higher the update speed, you feel the softer screen of a phone. As I wrote in that piece prior to the aforementioned launch, “that may seem like Marketing Mumbo Jumbo if he has been perfectly happy with his 60Hz iPhone so far, but take it from me: the difference between an 60Hz update rate and an 120Hz update rate is absolutely tangible for those who have experienced both.”
But Apple didn’t stop there. The iPhone 17 also obtains a larger screen than the iPhone 16, courtesy of the thinner bezels. The real dimensions of the two phones are the same, but will obtain a panel OLED Super Retina XDR Super Retina XDR of 6.3 inches pro-proof of equation 17 in the newest model.
Then there are the updates of under the helmet. Apple’s new and most powerful A19 chipset may sound like an iterative improvement in the A18, and in terms of gross performance, it is likely. But the A19 will also bring tangible improvements to the battery life of the iPhone 17, if Apple’s bold promise of “eight more hours of video playback compared to the previous generation” is something to happen.
Other apparently significant improvements include Ceramic Shield 2, the new screen protection technology “three times as Durable” by Apple, an improved ultra -wide camera and a new central selfie camera on the stage, which will be found in the four iPhone 17 models.
But even if it is not sold in the benefits of any of those aforementioned updates, the iPhone 17 is also objectively better value than the iPhone 16 in relation to its professional counterpart.
Apple has eliminated the storage capacities of 128 GB in all models of the iPhone 17, but instead of simply increasing the initial price of the iPhone 17 at the price of 256 GB of the iPhone 16, it is stuck with the price of 128 GB of the latter ($ 799 / £ 799 / au $ 1,399). In other words, you get twice the storage for the same money.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro begins at $ 1,099 / £ 1,099 / AU $ 1,999, that is the same price as the iPhone 16 Pro of 256 GB, but it is also $ 100 / £ 100 / au $ 200 more expensive than the initial price of $ 999 / £ 999 / au $ 1,799 of that telephone in particular.
Still with me? To put it in another way: the iPhone 17 is $ 299 / £ 299 / au $ 600 cheaper than the iPhone 17 Pro, while the iPhone 16 was only $ 199/0 199 / au $ 400 cheaper than the iPhone 16 Pro. There are $ 100 / £ 100 / au $ 200 additional between the two models this year.
All this is to say that, despite looking like an update boring on the iPhone 16, the iPhone 17 is now, for my money, the best iPhone for most people.
Yes, the 48MP teleobjective camera of the iPhone 17 Pro sounds very impressive, and if you are looking for one of the best camera phones, it is likely to find it on the last flagship of Apple.
But for everyone else, I do not see that the iPhone 17 Pro Valga the premium of $ 299 / £ 299 / au $ 600 on the iPhone 17. And my Techradar colleagues seem to agree.
“The iPhone 17 was the winner of the ‘Awe Delwping’ event of Apple,” wrote staff writer Jamie Richards when Curtain fell in this week’s showcase, while our news manager editor Jake Krol, said that the iPhone 17 could be the best standard iPhone in years “in its practical review of the iPhone 17.
So, although the super thin framework and the impressive capabilities of the iPhone Air chamber and the iPhone 17 Pro are certainly tempting, I urge you to feel and consider whether the most cheaper iPhone 17 could be better for your needs.
