Appeals presented to the UN on behalf of Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi

The founder of Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, and his wife Bushra Bibi have presented formal appeals to the United Nations Special Rapporteur about torture about his alleged arbitrary detention and inhuman treatment, said PTI Zulfi Bukhari leader.

Bringing X on Friday, Bukhari revealed that two appeals had been formally presented on behalf of the PTI imprisoned chief and his spouse. He added that the appeals were made with the assistance of the strategies of the Human Rights law firm.

“I am pleased to announce that two formal appeals have been presented to the UN Special Rapporteur on torture, @dralicejedwards, on behalf of former prime minister @imrankhanti and his wife, Bushra Bibi,” Bukhari wrote in X.

Bukhari said that Khan’s appeal was presented by his children, Sulaiman and Kasim, while Bushra Bibi’s sister, Maryam Wattoo, presented the submission in her name. In addition, he claimed that the couple’s current arrest is politically motivated and aims to undermine the resolution of the former prime minister.

“We will never stop lifting our voices on each platform against its arbitrary detention and inhuman treatment. For the first time in the history of Pakistan, the wife of a political prisoner is also being imprisoned, only to break its resolution,” said Bukhari.

He also thanked Jared Geser and Jacob Bogart of Persus Strategies for his “invaluable support” in the preparation of the legal documentation presented to the UN agency.

Development occurs in the midst of current legal battles involving former prime minister and his wife, who have been sentenced in multiple cases during the past year, including the cases of Toshakhana and IDDAT. PTI and their supporters have repeatedly called convictions as politically motivated.

The UN Special Rapporteur about torture is an independent expert designated by the UN Human Rights Council to investigate and inform about topics related to torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishments worldwide.

Separately, Kasim wrote: “My father, Imran Khan, is in prison because he defended democracy. He is arrested in lonely confinement, denied access to his doctors and restricted to meet his lawyers and relatives. At the same time, his family members and thousands of their supporters have been abducted or dragged before military courtiers.”

He described his father’s imprisonment as political revenge, stating: “This is not justice: it is a political revenge. Pakistan’s democracy is at stake, and ask all those who believe in human rights and democracy that stop us with us so that the voice of the people is heard and the government of the law is restored.”
