WASHINGTON:
Paramount said Friday that he condemned a promise signed earlier this week for more than 4,000 actors, artists and producers, including some Hollywood stars, not to work with Israeli movie institutions that consider that they are accomplices in the abuse of the Palestinians by Israel.
Why is it important
Paramount became the first important study to respond to the commitment launched on Monday.
Some organizations have faced boycott calls and protests on ties with the Israeli government as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza of Israel’s military assault grows, and the images of hungry Palestinians, including children, cause global outrage.
Key quotes
“We do not agree with recent efforts to boycott Israeli filmmakers. Silence individual creative artists based on their nationality does not promote better understanding or advances the cause of peace,” Paramount said. “We need more commitment and communication, no less.”
The promise of early this week said that he was not urging anyone to stop working with Israeli individuals, but that “the call is that cinema workers refuse to work with Israeli institutions that are accomplices of the abuse of Israel’s human rights.”
Israeli film institutions had dedicated themselves to “bleaching or justifying” the abuse of the Palestinians, he said, causing parallels with the way the artists had made a similar promise in the past against the South Africa of the Apartheid era.
The signatories included actors Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo, Tilda Swinton, Riz Ahmed, Javier Bardem and Cynthia Nixon, among others.
