HRCP Slams Swabi Jirga on transgender expulsion

Peshawar:

The Pakistan Human Rights Commission (HRCP) has issued a condemnation of the decision of a Jirga Swabi to expel all transgender people in the district. It has noticed that such unconstitutional actions are equivalent to the incitement to violence against a marginalized community.

The HCRP issued the statement on Sunday after reports arose in the media that a 11 -member elderly committee had declared that all transgender people would be expelled from Swabi.

In a statement issued in X, the HRCP said that no citizen can be deprived of the right to reside, work or make a living anywhere in Pakistan on the basis of gender identity.

He asked the provincial and district authorities to “immediately guarantee the security and dignity of transgender people in Swabi and maintain their fundamental rights under the Constitution and the Law of Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) of 2018”.

The elderly committee in question understood the president of Tehsil de Jui-F Maulana Abdul Samad Haqqani and others. Samad said they wanted transgender people to leave the district peacefully and make a living elsewhere. “While living here, music shows [continue to] Being fixed, negatively impacting young people, “he said.

To another member of the committee, Yasir Khan said that in the first phase, transgender people would be asked to peacefully abandon the district, and if that does not happen, the District Police will be addressed.

The members of the committee also said that they would probably meet in the next few days and separately would also hold a meeting with the District Police to discuss a strategy to “expel” the transgender people.
