KatmandĂș: a former DJ and its dark non -profit organization used a popular social networks application among video games to boost mass protests and become the unlikely power corridors when installing the new interim leadership of the country.

Sudan Gurung, the 36 -year -old founder of Hami Nepal (We Are Nepal), used the Discord and Instagram messaging application to mobilize mass demonstrations that forced Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign, in the most fatal political crisis to hit the Himalayan nation in decades, a dozen people involved in the demonstrations said.

The group used VPN to access prohibited platforms and issued calls to the action that came to tens of thousands of young people, they added. OLI representatives could not be contacted to comment.

“I was invited to join a group in Discord where there were about 400 members. He asked us to join the march of the protest a few kilometers from Parliament,” said 18 -year -old student Karan Kulung Rai, who is not part of the group. Reuters.

Hami Nepal’s first publication publications in Discord became so influential that they were referenced on national television.

As the protests became violent, the group also identified the messages called “false news” and shared hospital phone numbers.

The members of Hami Nepal, who asked not to be identified, since they had used online power names for security reasons, said Gurung and the other group leaders have become plants in high -risk decisions, including the appointment of the new interim leadership until the elections are held on March 5.

They have already convinced the president and head of the country’s army to appoint the former president of the Supreme Court Sushila Karki, known for his hard position against corruption, as the first woman Prime Minister of Nepal to an interim capacity, three members of the group said.

“I will make sure that the power meets the people and bring all corrupt politicians to justice,” Gurung said at his first press conference since Thursday’s protest.

On Sunday, Gurung and his team were in meetings to decide the key positions of the cabinet and proposed that some government officials designated by the previous administration were eliminated, members of Hami Nepal said.

“The meetings are ongoing between Karki and the group members. We will end the cabinet soon,” said one of the members. Gurung and Karki did not immediately answer the questions sent to their mobile phones.

The “process is being carried out carefully, so it consists of qualified and capable young people,” said Hami Nepal on Instagram.

The protests were aimed at the corruption of the perceived government and took off after a prohibition of multiple social media platforms, a directive that was invested. The protesters faced the authorities in the streets, leaving at least 72 dead and more than 1,300 injured.

Gurung, which is older than the Genic Group of generation Z, and his team has promised not to occupy any cabinet post, but wants to be part of the future decision making.

“We do not want to be politicians. Sudan Gurung was only helping the group ‘Gen Z’ and we are only the voice of the nation and we are not interested in taking leadership positions,” said Ronesh Pradhan, a 26 -year -old volunteer for the group.

Gurung, who was DJ before founding Hami Nepal, organized civic relief when the worst earthquake in Nepal’s history killed more than 9,000 people in 2015, and during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The team members who execute the Instagram account, whose followers have increased to more than 160,000, and discord positions together with Gurung include the 24 -year -old coffee owner, Ojaswi Raj Thapa, and the right graduate Real Raj Dangal.

Thapa, who quickly emerged as a vocal protest movement leader, said Reuters In an interview, the Judiciary was not independent and ensure that its freedom was a key priority once the interim government was implemented.

“We may need some changes in the Constitution, but we do not want to dissolve the Constitution,” he said Thursday.
