- Nikon announced in IBC that he is developing film lenses
- There is currently no timeline about when to wait for the first models
- They will be designed for Nikon Z movie cameras, including the ZR
Nikon raised his position in the space of the film camera when he bought favorite red digital cameras of the industry in 2024, and has dedicated himself to capitalizing the association at a knot rate.
Only 18 months later, there are already two red cameras relaunciated with the Z Nikon assembly, the V-Rptor and the Komodo, a more affordable V-Rptor XE, in addition to the first model in a completely new line of Nikon Z film, the Nikon ZR.
Branded Nikon Red, the ZR is a highly capable and polished Z-Mount camera, with a 6K 60 FPS video, a 12-bit RAW in the camera, a new R3D ‘NE’ red price, 32-bit audio capture and a rival 4-inch touch screen, all at a low price that puts the chant of the canyon, the canon and even Panasonic.
The ZR is a first big step in a new world for Nikon and seems to be ready to bother our best video camera guide, but by design it is an enthusiastic level model, while the system is still in your childhood. Red to be in the image will move things very well, but I am still curious to know what follows for Nikon.
During the IBC 2025 show in Amsterdam this week, I sat down with Nikon to discuss your Z film cameras series, and I got some surprisingly open answers about what we can expect below.
The cinema lenses will come
Nikon has long been the brand of a photographer. Yes, its recent mirror models, such as Z9 and Z6 III hybrid, shoot high quality video, but Nikon’s team is mainly designed for photography.
That changed with Nikon’s first Z Film camera, the true compact ZR. However, there is still the issue of lenses. Canon and Sony already do hybrid lenses: with a video from AA AA AA Apertura click. Nikon doesn’t, but had some exciting news to share with me.
“We are developing Nikkor cinema lenses,” said Aihara Takashi, general manager of the UX Planning Department – Nikon Imaging Business Unit.
“It will take some time until the launch, of course,” Aihara continued, “but I hope they expect it, it is [sic] It will be really excellent film glasses. “
Usually, brands have tight lips as a future team, but Nikon openly commits their own film lenses.
This is excellent news for those impressed by ZR capabilities and excellent value, but they are not sure to adopt the Z-Mount system for video, given how young the system is and the absence of dedicated video lenses, in addition to a Z 28-135mm f/4 pz hybrid (power zoom).
The movie theater has also licensed its mount to Leica, which means that the Leitz Hektor of Leitz Ludicroty warm is now available for the Z-Mount. However, I suspect that most people expect to see what Nikkor movie lenses are announced and when they will be available.
But what about more Nikon movie cameras?
I imagine that another model will join the ranks of the Z cinema camera: Surely Nikon will not stop at the ZR?
The ZR is a first video equivalent of the Z6 III, which is a full middle range frame model. Therefore, there would be symmetry if Nikon announced an equivalent Z9 badge in its range of film cameras, one with a larger body and space to adapt to connectivity and the pro -grade design touches.
For example, the ZR has a micro HDMI, not full size; A professional model would increase. If a larger model lands, it would also expect its memory cards to be accessed through a door on the side of the camera and not within the battery compartment as in the ZR. The battery doors are generally clogged when a camera is mounted on a tripod, which makes the memory card change with the ZR a complicated process with a tripod at stake.
Personally, I would also love a double axis inclination / angle. The ZR rival screen is bright and large, but only stops to the side: the screen cannot be tilted directly from the body. A1 II / A9 III of Sony and Lumix S1 II of Panasonic, on the other hand, they have such a screen.
I would also expect additional professional characteristics to the above, but still there should be some kind of distinction between a future Nikon Z film z and network level models such as the V-Rptor and Komodo to avoid the risk of cannibalization.
Nikon did not comment on any future camera team, but it is good that the cinema lenses are on their way. The way things go, Nikon / Red will sit comfortably with Sony and Canon, Panasonic and Blackmagic in the cinema space in a very short time, and probably at a more affordable price.
