Inside out 2 It made its way to the box office and on Disney Plus in 2024, breaking animation records for highest grossing and most streamed release, and since then, many of us have been anxiously wondering when we’ll be able to dive back into Riley’s mind.
After all, the new movie contained a couple of key details that hinted at more sequel stories to come, including the introduction of a new emotion (Nostalgia, voiced by June Squibb) that didn’t play a major role in Inside out 2but it gave us a hint of a character who could return in future films.
I spoke with writer and director Kelsey Mann, who neither confirmed nor denied that Pixar was considering expanding the franchise with Inside out 3 (already launched a spin-off TV show); The only thing he said was that there was nothing in the project yet: “[There are] “There are no current plans for any follow-up films,” he told me.
Where ideas are made
Mann, however, revealed during a conversation about the making of Inside out 2 that he had explored three different story ideas for the sequel, as well as “many [new] emotions arriving at the headquarters.” While two of these obviously didn’t make the cut, this means there are likely some ideas left in the storyboard.
These ideas could very well end up making their way into future films of the From the inside out franchise, especially if some characters/emotions, like the aforementioned Nostalgia, return to play a more important role in later installments.
the story of Inside out 2 suggests an infinite number of possible new characters that could join in future outings, as the introduction of four new emotions in addition to Nostalgia (Anxiety, Ennui, Shame and Envy) to represent Riley’s maturing mind as she transitions from child to teenager suggests this could happen again as he gets older.
“There are so many ideas. I don’t have a general concept of Riley when she [a certain] age. I don’t have any of that, but I have a lot of ideas in mind for other territories or other emotions that I think would be cool,” Mann said when discussing the different possibilities for turning neuroscience ideas into colorful animated analogies.
Mann’s enthusiasm for where one of the best disney plus movies could be next is infectious, to the point that it seems like a foregone conclusion that Pixar Studios will return to this golden goose soon enough. “There are so many great ideas that I think ‘this deserves to see the light of day.’ And I hope that’s the case, I really hope that’s the case,” Mann added.
A dream production

As Mann explains, dream productions, which is situated between the events of From the inside out and Inside out 2, “It takes place in Riley’s mind at Dream Productions, where all of her dreams are made like a movie studio.”
“It’s really fantastic and I can’t wait for the world to see it, because you’ll get to see a little more of Riley’s life, which we do a little more of,” Mann says of what will likely become one of the best Disney Plus shows with its 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating from audiences at the time of writing.
The series offers fans a great way to return to Riley’s mind between visions of two of the best family movies available to stream on Disney Plus. While the future of Inside out 3 It’s still up in the air, I have no doubt that we will return to headquarters in no time.
