- The NHTSSA opens an investigation into the handle handles of Tesla
- Chinese authorities could prohibit them completely
- The VW chief says that the handles of the download doors are “terrible to operate”
Tesla was to say that the first important automotive brand in introducing electronic doors of the doors in 2012, when the style mechanism in the S model remained at the work of the body and then magically appeared every time the vehicle is unlocked.
The company even has a page on its website dedicated to how to live with them.
It is a technically orderly design feature that has now been copied by multiple automotive brands, including Range Rover, Porsche and Myriad Chinese EV brands.
But apart from being terribly confusing for anyone who is not a FAIT with technology, the handles of the download doors are now under scrutiny by several authorities that question their safety.
Car News China reported that regulators in the country have started the process of research handles of the totally retractable doors due to security concerns, suggesting that there may be a direct prohibition of new vehicles that offer them.
The same website quotes the shock tests of the Automotive Insurance Security Index of China (C-IASI) that revealed vehicles with electronic handles of doors reached only one emerging success rate of 67% in lateral collisions.
In the US, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into around 174,000 Tesla Model and of the Model 2021 year after several complaints from the owners that they could not unlock the doors after stopping, according to the Financial Times.
There have been cases in which the occupants have been trapped inside Teslas after the battery aboard 12 V has died. Unless the owners are familiar with the emergency release protocol, several cases have had to resort to rupture windows.
Tesla has responded now, telling Bloomberg that he is redesigning his doors of the doors to be more intuitive to people in “a panic situation.”
Apparently, this update will combine the electronic and manual mechanisms of door release in a button, with the design chief of Tesla, Franz Von Holzhausen, saying “we will also have a really good solution for that” in response to those possible Chinese regulations.
VW Boss says no to the handles of the doors
Thomas Schäfer, the Volkswagen Passenger Cars CEO, has been recorded to say that the handles of the download doors look good but are “terrible to operate.”
Speaking in the Mobility Show of IAA, Schäfer was embarking at home the importance that the functions were easy to use for customers. “We definitely have adequate door handles in cars and customers appreciate it,” he added.
In addition to offering tiny improvements in aerodynamic performance, discharge doors handles are largely a style or design option, offering a touch of technological theater that many customers have been convinced.
But they are horrible to use, they are often completely struck when they freeze, with the potential to catch small fingers inside the mechanism.
I took the custody of a Turbo Porsche Taycan for a couple of weeks this year and experienced pinched digits on multiple occasions.
Similarly, I also experienced the doors of the doors completely frozen in an XPEng G6, having to address a jug of hot water just to enter the vehicle. I have also been caught inside a Tesla Model X early, but that is another story.
Okay, this problem is not limited to only completely rinsed doors, but is exacerbated by a characteristic that is not completely necessary.
Now, we could see the authorities clench in a security field, killing a great automotive discomfort forever. Alleluia.
