Oiea praises Pakistan’s role in peaceful nuclear programs


The International Atomic Energy Agency (OIEA) has recognized Pakistan’s constructive contribution to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and praised its constant progress in civil nuclear technology, Radio Pakistan reported Saturday.

The recognition occurred during a meeting between the general director of the OIEA, Rafael Mariano Grossi, and the president of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar, arrested in the bulge of the 69th General Conference of the IAEA in Vienna, Austria.

In a shared statement on social networks after the meeting, the head of the OIEA praised the cooperation of Pakistan with the agency and pointed out that the country’s nuclear energy program was constantly progressing.

Grossi also highlighted the recent start-up of the Chashma Nuclear Plant, Unit 5 (C-5) as an important milestone by Pakistan in his efforts to improve the production of clean and sustainable energy.

Remembering his visit to Pakistan earlier this year, Grossi described the first concrete that pours into a new nuclear site in February 2025 as an “important milestone” in the impulse of Pakistan for clean and sustainable energy.

The two officials also reviewed collaborative areas under the key initiatives of the OIEA, including the ATOMS4FOOD program, which uses nuclear technology to increase crop yields, improve food security and pest control, and hope rays, which aims to improve access to nuclear medicine and radiotherapy for cancer care, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region.

Grossi appreciated Pakistan’s proactive commitment with the agency, particularly in training, capacities development and the application of nuclear knowledge for socio -economic development. He pointed out that Pakistan remains a valuable partner to advance in the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to international nuclear safety standards, Dr. Anwar said that all nuclear power plants in the country operate under the highest security protocols.

He reiterated that Pakistan’s nuclear activities align with the vision of the OIEA and expressed the intention of the country to continue working closely with the agency and its member states to advance peaceful nuclear cooperation and regional development.
