The president of the United States, Trump, threatened Afghanistan on Saturday if he does not return control of the Bagram air base to the United States.
“If Afghanistan does not return the Bagram Air Base to those who built it, United States of America, bad things will happen,” Trump said in a social publication of truth.
Trump said Thursday that the United States had tried to recover control of the base used by US forces after the attacks of September 11, 2001. He told reporters on Friday that he was talking with Afghanistan about it.
The withdrawal of US forces in 2021 led to an acquisition of the base for the Taliban movement.
Afghan officials have expressed opposition to an American presence revived.
“Afghanistan and the United States need to commit to each other … without the United States having any military presence anywhere in Afghanistan,” said Zakir Jalal, an official of the Afghan Foreign Ministry, in a position in X on Thursday.
