New York’s freedom is moving from chief coach Sandy Bondello almost a year after the veteran WNBA The coach took the franchise to his first championship.
The team issued a statement on Tuesday announcing the decision not to renew the Bondello contract for the 2026 season.

“We would like to thank Sandy Brondello for their eternal impact on New York Liberty “ General manager Jonathan Kolb said in a statement. “Sandy ends her mandate in New York as the most winning coach in the history of the franchise, and took us to heights never seen as the first chief coach to take freedom to a championship.

“We wish Sandy the best in his next chapter.”
The movement occurs after freedom was eliminated from the playoffs after a first -round defeat before the Phoenix Mercury last week.
“It has been a privilege to have trained NY Liberty in these last four years. Bring the first championship to New York will always be the most surprising feeling. I want the team and the organization to be more successful in the future,” Bondello said in a statement to The Associated Press. ”

The WNBA champions were eliminated from the playoffs on Friday after a defeat by 79-73 in game 3 of their series against Mercury. At the press conference after the game, Breanna Stewart was surprised by a question of a journalist who asked what his answer to those questioning if Bondello should be brought for the next season.
“What is F —?” Stewart immediately responded.
“For anyone who asked Sandy here, this is a resistant group, and she supports us, and we have his. The way she continued dealing with the letters that was treated was incredible. It was not easy for anyone, but she came every day with a positive attitude and a mentality to put us in our best possible positions and the best foot.”

Despite the lesions for star players this season, Brondello brought freedom to the playoffs with seed number 5. Last season, he trained New York for his first WNBA title in the history of the franchise in a decisive victory of extra time of the 5th game over Minnesota.
He joined New York in 2022 after eight seasons in Phoenix, where he also took a championship to Mercury.
