“After consulting with medical experts, it was clear that surgery is the best option for John and his short and long term future,” Venables said in a statement. “It is extremely disappointed that some action of the game will be lost, but it is anxious to correct the problem and advance.
“As he is with everything, we know that he will be aggressive with his rehabilitation and his work to return to the field as quickly as possible.”

According to reports, Mateer is dealing with a broken bone in his right hand, according to ESPN, although the injury happened. It is expected to lose about a month for the Sooners.
