Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, the beloved chaplain of Loyola Chicago’s The male basketball team retires at 106 due to health problems, according to the school newspaper.
Sister Jean, who has become a basic element in the University Basketball The community and an important member of the Ramblers family since he was appointed team chaplain in 1994, has entered retirement only a few weeks after celebrating his 106th birthday.

Christian Anderson Communications Vice President confirmed The Loyola Phoenix Earlier this month, Schmidt will no longer meet in official tasks. He did not expand in the health concerns of Sister Jean.

“Sister Jean retires and moves away from official tasks in Loyola,” Anderson told the student newspaper. “We are aware of the privacy of the sister with respect to health and we cannot comment beyond what was mentioned in it [Aug. 21] message.”
In a message to students on her birthday, Sister Jean explained her absence on campus.
“Birthdays are special days, and this is also very special. In fact, I can’t be there because I have a bad summer cold and other health problems, so it has been decided that I shouldn’t go to Lake Shore campus to be with you on my birthday. That makes me very sad, but you can still celebrate.”

Sister Jean served as a team chaplain for 30 years, but entered the center of attention during the improbable appearance of Loyola Final Four in 2018 NCAA Championship tournament.
In 2023, he traveled to New York for the team’s first round of the team in the Atlantic 103 Conference Tournament. He was 103 years old when he made the trip.

“Well, I tell people when they ask me that question that as well, I sleep well and, hopefully, I pray well,” he said at that time.
“My basketball team keeps me young. All these young people keep me young at heart. I can’t walk, but they keep me young at heart,” he added.
