The elections of governor of New Jersey and Virginia have Democratic candidates with a Congress record of supporting trans athletes in women’s sports.
Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey and Abigail Spanberger of Virginia have been subject to scrutiny in recent days for their positions on the subject.
Spanberger was the subject of a recent viral interview with ABC13 when asked about trans people who practice sports of women and girls and use women’s baths. The Democratic candidate did not adopt a specific position.

“Then, in Virginia, until very recently, we have had a process in which in an individual, one for a base, schools, directors, parents, coaches were making decisions based on equity, competitiveness and security, where a child could or may not be able to play in a particular sport,” Spanberger said.
When asked if he would support a bill that allows trans people in women’s bathrooms and sports, Spanberger said: “It would support a bill that established clear provisions that provide a lot of local capacity for the entrance, based on the age of children, based on the type of sport, depending on competitiveness. Because I certainly recognize it, I absolutely recognize it.
“I recognize the concern that families and community members could have about the safety of their own children, about competitiveness, about equity. And I think the process that was in force for 10 years was one that was working. It was one that took into account individual circumstances and individual communities, and I think that is the process that Virginia should continue to use.”
Spanberger was a co -river of the Equality Law in 2021, which “prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and sexual characteristics”, and then, in 2023, he voted against the protection of women and girls in the sports law, which would have protected female athletes of trans competitors nationwide.
Meanwhile, Sherill has been criticized on social networks for his voting history of Congress on the subject.

The former female swimmer of the University of Pennsylvania and women’s sports activist, Paula Scanlan, Upenn’s first swimmer to talk about the controversy of Lia Thomas of the school in 2022, called Sherrill in X on the subject this week.
Like Spanberger, Sherrill also co -crocked the Equality Law, but Sherrill also co -crocked the declaration of transgender rights, which more explicitly “guarantees certain rights for transgender and non -binary people with respect to public services and accommodation,” including sports teams consisting of gender identity.
Sherrill also voted against the protection of the women’s law in sports, twice, when the bill was first proposed in 2023, and again last February when he reintroduced.
The New Jersey Republican Party attacked Sherrill for this album directly in a campaign chart last week.
Sherrill’s opponent, Republican Jack Ciattelli, mentioned this topic for Sherrill in a position in July.
Pak Gazette Digital has communicated with Sherrill and Spanberger campaigns that request clarity about why they voted as they did on those previous bills, and if they would enforce the executive order of President Donald Trump “keeping men out of women’s sports” as governor of their respective states. No campaign has provided an answer.
In January, a New York Times/Ipsos Survey He discovered that the vast majority of Americans, including most Democrats, do not believe that transgender athletes are allowed to compete in women’s sports. Of the 2,128 people who participated, 79% said that biological men who identify as women should not be allowed to participate in women’s sports.
Of the 1,025 people who identified themselves as Democrats or inclined Democrats, 67% said that transgender athletes should not be able to compete with women. Between 1,022 Republicans, that number was 94%.
The 81 independents who were interviewed represented the group with the greatest reluctance to say that transgender athletes should not be able to compete. Only 64% said they were against, while 26% refused to respond. Only 3% of the Democrats and 1% of the Republicans refused to respond.
Almost 70% of Americans say that biological men should not be allowed to compete in women’s sports, according to a Gallup poll last year.
Additional data suggest that the problem hit the 2024 elections.
TO national output survey Directed by the Committee for Legislative Action for Women for America (CWA) in question, it found that 70% of moderate voters saw the issue of “Donald Trump’s opposition to transgender children and men who interpret sports of girls and women and transgender boys and men who used baths of girls and women” as is important for them. And 6% said it was the most important issue of all, while 44% said it was “very important.”
Meanwhile, prominent democratic figures have retreated in the support of their party to men in women’s sports, including Pete Buttigieg, Gavin Newsom and even Kamala Harris.
In his recent book “107 days”, Harris wrote that “he agrees” with the concerns of parents and athletes who oppose leaving Men compete with females.
“I agree with the concerns expressed by parents and players that we have to take into account biological factors such as muscle mass and athletic advantage of unfair students when we determine who plays in which teams, especially in contact sports,” Harris wrote.
