Paul Skenes was the only brilliant point in a season to forget Pittsburgh’s pirates and ended 2025 with a high note, establishing a franchise record for most strikeouts in a season of a right -handed pitcher.
Skenes had seven strikeouts, since it did not allow races in four hits against the Cincinnati reds in its final scheduled beginning of the year. The pirates defeated their central opponent of the National League 4-3 in 11 entries. Of course, he did it with his girlfriend, Olivia Dunne, looking at Great American Ballpark.

The year ended with an effectiveness of 1.97 and 216 strikeouts for the year. The pirates announced during the game that established the brand for most strikeouts in a single season for a right. Bob Veale and Oliver Pérez had more strikeouts in a single season.
Skenes became the first described pitcher with an effectiveness of less than 2.00 since Justin Verlander achieved the feat in 2022. He is the youngest pitcher to achieve statistics since Dwight Gooden, 20, prepared an effectiveness of 1.53 in 1985.
“I’m really worse than last year,” said Skenes. “It was 1.96 last year. I have 1.97 this year. I just have to be better. No, it’s great. I don’t get a year with any numerical objective.”

The effectiveness of Skenes is the second best mark of a qualified pirates pitcher, since Wilbur Cooper had an effectiveness of 1.87 in 1916. The effectiveness of 1.96 of Skenes through 55 beginnings of race is the lowest for any pitcher in that period since 1913.
The pirates manager, Don Kelly, said he expected Skenes to break down some records during his career.

“There will be many records that Paul Skenes will have as he continues throughout his career,” Kelly said. “How it prepares. How to compete. What start today and what season has had.”
