- Gmail can now send E2EE emails to users who are not from Gmail, but it is not so simple
- Only Workpace Enterprise plus customers can use the function
- It is still much more accessible than s/mime
Google is strengthening email security by offering customer encryption to Gmail users, even if they send the recipients with other email suppliers.
It means that Gmail senders will be able to encrypt emails (E2EE) from the end among the suppliers, for example, if they are sent from Gmail to Outlook, ensuring that unjustified access to the content of their message is not granted.
However, there is a key difference in how the recipients can open their emails, and it will not be as soft as the direct landing content in their inbox.
Gmail users can send emails encrypted to all
Gmail-To Gmail E2EE emails are shown in regular email because Google can deal with the infrastructure for the sender and the recipient, but because Google has no control over the infrastructure of the recipients in other suppliers, they will be directed to a guest Gmail account to open the mail.
Even so, it guarantees that commercial users can communicate safely without the discomfort of exchanging keys or download specialized software.
“This capacity, which requires minimal efforts for both IT teams and end users, abstracts traditional IT complexity and experiences of lower quality users of existing solutions, while preserving the sovereignty of improved data, privacy and security controls,” Google said.
From the launch, it will be available for Google Workspace Enterprise Plus customers with the complement of insured controls. Rollout has already begun, but it could take until mid -October so that all users see the changes.
In a blog post separated above in 2025, the Senior Products Manager of Google Workspace, Johney Burke, and product manager Julien Duplant criticized the S/Mime protocol today for being difficult to work, hence the effort to simplify the email encryption of the suppliers.
But Google is not the only company that works to simplify encryption. Proton also offers complete E2EE for their own users, as well as protected links with password for third parties to see encryption mail.
