Surfshark just introduced a major network upgrade: the world’s first 100Gbps VPN servers.
These new servers mark a big leap from the current industry standard of 10 Gbps. This means that Surfshark’s servers could handle much more data at once, eliminating bottlenecks during peak times. Even if many people use the VPN at the same time, you should benefit from a smoother connection.
Surfshark is already among the best VPN providers, and this move significantly sets it apart from the competition.

As Surfshark explains in a blog post, “This development represents a major leap forward over standard 10Gbps servers, a leap designed to meet the growing demands of today’s digital landscape.”
It’s hard to disagree, as the industry standard is 10Gbps, meaning the upgrade should offer much more data capacity than today’s fastest VPNs. It is important to note that this refers to the total bandwidth capacity of each server and not the speeds of individual users.
According to Surfshark, the new infrastructure is designed to handle much heavier loads without slowing down. In practice, that means faster, more consistent connections, even during peak hours when VPN networks are often under pressure.
Surfshark says it is preparing for the future. As more and more users require fast connections for things like 4K streaming, gaming, virtual reality, and remote work, server bandwidth must increase to meet those needs.

“All users connected to the server have much more legroom and get better speed,” said Karolis Kačiulis, Lead Systems Engineer at Surfshark. Kačiulis also highlighted that Surfshark wants to drive innovation across the industry, pushing its competitors to upgrade from 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps.
Kačiulis believes that 100Gbps VPN servers will one day be the standard, and Surfshark wanted to be the first VPN service to offer that upgrade.
To begin with, the launch is limited to a few servers in Amsterdam, but Surfshark says it has plans for possible future launches in other locations around the world.
Surfshark paves the way for other VPN providers
The claims made in the Surfshark ad are valid – this is truly an industry first. No doubt some of its competitors will want to do the same, although it’s hard to predict when that might happen. Surfshark also does not specify how long this limited release will last or when we will see 100Gbps servers outside of the Netherlands.
Most VPNs today advertise server speeds of 10 Gbps, which is a standard that has only become common in recent years. Surfshark itself only upgraded to 10Gbps across its entire fleet in late 2024.
Providers like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Proton VPN have upgraded connections from 1Gbps to 10Gbps to reduce congestion and improve reliability, but Surfshark is the first to go further.
