
JK Rowling responded after Vancouver park officials recently apologized to the LGBTQ+ community for allowing a harry potter-themed event in Stanley Park.
During a board meeting on Oct. 7, the Vancouver Park Board expressed regret over the approval of Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forest Experience, which opens in November.
Local activist Rob Hadley told the board that supporting a project linked to Rowling “gives a platform to someone who has spread harmful views about transgender people.”
Commissioner Brennan Bastyovanszky responded with an apology, saying parks “should be welcoming to everyone” and promising more support for trans and two-spirit groups.
The board also voted to reaffirm its support for transgender rights and decided to harry potter The event will take place during a single season, without extensions.
The apology came after backlash over Rowling’s past comments on transgender issues.
Commissioner Tom Digby wrote on
Rowling later mocked X’s apology, writing: “I didn’t even know Vancouver Parks and Recreation had recognized me, so the disavowal hasn’t been a huge blow. Next time, send me a certificate of recognition, let me frame it and then revoke it.”
