- Apple TV+ will change its name to Apple TV
- This appears to be the only change and nothing else is affected.
- This could cause confusion since Apple already has other products called Apple TV
Apple TV+ is rebranding. One of the best streaming services is dropping the last part of its name and will now be called simply Apple TV.
Apple announced the change in a press release from F1which is one of the new movies that joined the streamer in December, where they said: “Apple TV+ is now simply Apple TV, with a vibrant new identity.”
No other changes to the service have been announced, but The Hollywood Reporter said: “There has been speculation in the advertising world in recent months that Apple could follow Netflix and others in offering an ad-based tier both to improve profitability and provide choice to consumers.”
So perhaps Apple TV+’s rebranding to Apple TV will be followed by more changes, after the streaming service’s recent price hike in August. But I’m convinced this change is similar to the HBO Max rebrand and is unnecessarily confusing.
Streaming services are already confusing enough
There are many options when it comes to streaming services. A major criticism that people have is that there is too much a lot options: For example, there are countless add-on channels for places like Prime Video. There is something for everyone, whether you are a horror fan, a movie buff or want reality TV, for example.
Considering there are so many options, isn’t it best to keep things simple? I was equally frustrated when Max changed its name to HBO Max, instead of always keeping the HBO brand in the name to make clear what it offered.
Apple TV is in a similar situation. By removing the plus symbol, they now ended up with three different products, all with the same name.
The Apple TV 4K TV app, streaming service, and physical device now share the same name. It was much easier to refer to the streaming service as Apple TV+ because it made a clear distinction.
Of course, there may be more changes to make things easier to identify. But in the meantime, the new name is still confusing and I think things would have remained simpler if they had kept their original branding.
Apple TV+ is already a household name with award-winning hits like Rupture and The studyand it seems like this name change is going to frustrate people more than anything else. Let’s hope they decide to clear things up in the future.
