Your bank may also be affected

While the problems with our Echo devices this morning are annoying, a more serious repercussion of the AWS outage for many will be that several banks will be affected.

In the UK, Downdetector is showing big spikes at Lloyds, Halifasx Bank of Scotland and even HM Revenue & Customs. It just shows how deep and broad the Amazon Web Services infrastructure is and how badly the Internet is affected when it runs into rare problems.

The latest from the AWS dashboard at 1:26 am PDT / 9:26 am BST is that “significant error rates” are occurring in the ‘US-EAST-1 Region’ and that “engineers were immediately involved and are actively working to mitigate the issue and fully understand the root cause.” Let’s hope they do it sooner rather than later…

This explains those Alexa problems.

While it’s unlikely to be the most serious problem today, the first time many saw the impact of Amazon’s Web Services outage was with its Alexa voice assistant.

This Reddit thread shows that many recently reported issues with the assistant, with some saying they “had to manually turn off the lights” and couldn’t set their alarms.

Well, AWS is the root cause, and Alexa is far from the only service experiencing problems. In addition to Ring, Snapchat and Zoom, we’re also seeing banking apps like Lloyds and Halifax in the UK and Robinhood in the US showing big spikes in Downdetector…

This is an earthquake online.

The Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage began around 7:40 a.m. BST, according to Downdetector, and the domino effect has wiped out much of the internet.

Right now, Alexa, Snapchat, Ring, Roblox, Fortnite, Zero, Signal, Canva, and many others are showing big spikes in reports on Downdetector.

The issues show how many services depend on Amazon’s cloud computing services. The AWS health dashboard shows an “operational issue” in Northern Virginia that is producing “increased error rates and latencies.” This is going to have serious repercussions for millions today…
