The United States women’s gymnastics team won only two medals at the World Championships held in Jakarta last week. It was the country’s lowest medal total in international competition since 2001.

The only two medalists from the United States were Leanne Wong, who won silver in the all-around, and Joscelyn Roberson, who won bronze in vault.

American program leader Chellsie Memmel addressed the team’s poor performance.

“It was tough,” Memmel said, according to Olympics.com. “There were some really good pieces, but then there were tough things. I didn’t feel like there was an attack on his events and his overall skills. There were still good things, but I have work to do.

“We’ll talk about it, but we won’t beat him to death,” Memmel continued. “They know what happened. They know they didn’t perform at their best, so they’ll want to come in, train and reset.”

The United States is accustomed to regular dominance in the women’s division of international gymnastics. This was only the third year since 2006 that the United States did not finish with the most women’s medals since 2006, aside from 2017 and 2021, when it tied with Japan and Russia for the most.

This year, the team was without superstars Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jade Carey and Jordan Chiles.

If last week is any indication, it could spell trouble for the US women’s gymnastics dynasty heading into the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“For me, it means taking every corner with the intention of making it great and having confidence in it,” Memmel explained. “Believe in that, believe in themselves, do that and know that they can do it when the time comes to raise their hand.”
