The Institute of Business Management (IoBM) on Monday reversed its decision to expel a student, who accused the university’s transportation department of harassment and raised complaints against two senior faculty members, after the student body came out in support of the student.
The incident
About a month ago, the student in question, enrolled in the varsity’s BBA program, entered the IOBM Transportation Office to collect her ID card. Ten minutes later, he left the room in a panic, shaking and crying. She ran to the human resources department, where she said that Messrs. S* and B* from the Transportation Office had tried to close the door with her inside.
“[When I went to collect my card] They started looking at me strangely and kept looking me up and down. Then one of the men started recording me. “The other man walked towards the door trying to close it.”
The student only managed to escape because her classmates outside the office responded to her screams, allowing her to escape from the room.
The human resources department heard the panicked student. He then simply told her that this was not his domain as it was not his department. The student was accused of “overreacting” and called a “liar.”
Perplexed, the student informed her family, turned to two senior faculty members and told them what had happened.
“Aggressive behavior”
At first, the two teachers comforted her. However, when his enraged brother arrived, the assurances turned into anger toward the student.
A heated argument broke out between the student’s family and university staff, and the human resources department completely denied having been informed of the matter.
According to the student, the school administration blamed her, accusing her and her family of “having aggressive behavior towards the administrative staff.” They used this as a reason for expulsion, when in reality, the student insists, it was the staff who had misbehaved with her family.
In the following days, the student was summoned before a disciplinary committee, where she was accused of misconduct and harassment of senior faculty members.
She was the “Permanently Expelled”.
“After careful deliberation, the Committee has determined that you are guilty of misbehaving towards staff members of three offices of the Institute which are Transportation, Human Resources and Academic. Your behavior has created a chaotic situation in the respective offices mentioned above,” the expulsion email reads.
The students respond
On October 22, the student took to social media. Detailing the events at the Transportation Office and his subsequent expulsion, he posted to an informal campus group.
The post quickly gained traction and was widely shared among the student body. His peers expressed their support and mobilized against the administrator, gathering outside the main administration block the next day.
Hundreds of students protested against the administrator, holding signs and shouting slogans in support of the student, outraged by the alleged harassment and subsequent mistreatment of the student.
A university spokesperson said The express PAkGazette that classes had to be moved online due to growing anti-management sentiment among the student body.
As news of the student protests spread, IoBM was forced to reconsider its decision and sprang into action.
“Most universities in Pakistan believe that students can be isolated, singled out and bullied and that there are no student unions who care. However, the IOBM student body proved the administration wrong, which has now reportedly led to the dismissal of the transportation staff member the student had originally complained against,” lawyer Jibran Nasir wrote in X, earlier Twitter.
The IOBM student body is coming together to demand justice for a fellow student who was allegedly expelled for complaining about the alleged harassment she faced while the University responded by accusing her of being disrespectful to staff.
