ISLAMABAD:
In a rare show of political alignment, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has agreed to support Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) nomination of Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai for the post of opposition leader in the National Assembly.
The agreement was reached during a meeting between a PTI delegation and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman at his Islamabad residence on Wednesday, according to a statement posted on the JUI-F’s official X account.
“The JUI-F agreed to support the nomination of Mehmood Khan Achakzai,” the post said.
The PTI delegation comprised Asad Qaiser, PTI Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) president Junaid Akbar and Shahram Khan Tarakai, while Maulana Fazlur Rehman was accompanied by Maulana Salahuddin Ayubi, lawyer Jalaluddin and his son Maulana Asjad Mehmood.
During the meeting, “the PTI delegation appealed to the JUI-F chief to play a role in unifying the opposition in parliament,” the statement said, adding that the PTI also sought the “cooperation” of the JUI-F regarding a vacant KP Senate seat.
The two sides also discussed the general political climate, regional situation and parliamentary strategy.
According to the JUI-F statement, the PTI delegation “further consulted the JUI-F chief on the proposal to hold a national jirga on the law and order situation in KP.” Fazlur Rehman welcomed the proposal, he said.
