As everyone already knows, Windows 10 has reached end of life (EOL), which can be quite a stressful process for IT teams managing the move or for everyday users bewildered by the sudden change in appearance.
Several software tools have emerged that promise to make the transition easier (or help you protect your software if you decide not to migrate yet), but be careful when using them, as they may not be all they seem.
One of them is Flyoobe, successor to Flyby11, a legitimate tool that can help enable safe upgrades to Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, bypassing system requirements to allow for a hassle-free setup. However, its developer has warned that a malicious copy of the software could be circulating, trapping unsuspecting users.
Skip the fluff, eliminate the junk.
In a security alert on GitHub, the developers explain that the copy may contain malware or a modified version of the software, so be sure to only download it directly from the GitHub version, as this copy could be dangerous.
The tool aims to offer a “full, customizable out-of-the-box experience” that makes Windows 11 more accessible to those who don’t have the most up-to-date hardware. Compatibility checks often complicate the migration process with unsupported systems, so to avoid them, Flyoobe requires system-level access.
Systems-level access is a goldmine for attackers, as they can use it as a foothold to gain access to networks or other devices, building backdoors to maintain access, so fake software with these permissions is even more dangerous than usual.
Downloading anything from an unverified source is a huge risk. Recent investigations uncovered thousands of web pages abused by hackers to spread malware, and that’s just in one campaign.
