- Microsoft confirms that ‘refresh and shutdown’ caused PC restart to fail
- Its latest preview fixes the issue that has long plagued Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems.
- Unfortunately, the preview that fixes the issue has a bug in Task Manager that consumes system resources.
It’s another week and another focus on Windows 11 bugs from Microsoft, shortly after users noticed the optional 25H2 preview update and its Task Manager bug, but this has been a problem for years on two different Windows operating systems and Microsoft has finally fixed it.
As reported by TweakTown, Microsoft has fixed a bug that causes PCs to reboot when the “refresh and shutdown” prompt is selected, which was confirmed in the patch notes for its optional October 28 preview (KB5067036), which lists it as an “underlying issue.”
On all the Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems I have used, none of them have in fact updated and turned off when prompted, and I always end up rebooting, to the point where it pushed me to resort to direct power button shutdown. It’s quite funny as there has always been an option to ‘refresh and restart’, but it has essentially been deprecated.
This has been one of the most notorious bugs among the litany of issues that come with new Microsoft Windows updates and has plagued Windows 10 and 11 for years, leaving most users baffled as to why it occurred. There’s still no clarity on what caused it, but the important thing is that Microsoft says it’s gone, which I’ll be sure to test next time an update arrives.
However, before you jump to the preview of this fix, you may want to stop, as this is the same preview that has the new Task Manager error; To highlight, Task Manager remains open in the background when closed, which ultimately increases CPU and memory usage, so it’s best to stay away until Microsoft fixes this issue with a stable release.
Analysis: It’s one of the many frustrating Windows 11 bugs, but I’m glad Microsoft fixed it
Microsoft and its Windows 11 operating system has literally been one of the most frustrating user experiences I’ve ever had due to unexplained bugs, but at this point, I’m glad this long-running update and shutdown issue has finally been resolved.
Unfortunately, however, it doesn’t end there; Game performance is another matter, now that we’ve seen many games run on SteamOS at better frame rates, and the same can be said for system and game errors. I’ve lost count of how many times my system has frozen while I’m in-game, simply multitasking or having issues with the Bluetooth audio device not allowing me to select an output due to constant flashing.
I could go on forever about these issues, but my only hope is that Microsoft can crack down on bugs like this at a rapid pace, and considering how long it’s taken to resolve the update and shutdown issue, it’s hard to know what you’ll get in terms of an ETA of fixes from Microsoft.
