- WhatsApp finally launched an official app for Apple Watch
- It allows you to read complete WhatsApp messages, record voice notes and more
- The app is available to download today for Apple Watch Series 4 and up
Five months after launching its first iPad app, WhatsApp has given Apple fans another gift by launching an official app for the Apple Watch.
While it’s been possible for years to read WhatsApp notifications on your Apple Watch, the official app promises to bring several new features to your wrist.
For starters, you’ll be able to read entire WhatsApp messages on your Apple Watch (including long ones from your detailed friend). You’ll also be able to react to messages on your watch, including using emojis for a quick reaction.
Beyond messages, the new Apple Watch app will also give you call notifications (so you can see who’s calling without looking at your phone) and the ability to record and send voice messages, if you want.
Meta also says that you’ll be able to see “more of your chat history” when you read messages on your Apple Watch. In short, it will replicate much of the phone app experience, and Meta promises that it plans to offer “even more useful features for people with Apple Watch in the future.”
What models are compatible?
The new WhatsApp app for Apple Watch is available to download today, as long as you have an Apple Watch Series 4 or later that also runs watchOS 10 or later.
The Series 4 came out in September 2018, so if you bought an Apple Watch in the last seven years, you should be covered. The watchOS 10 update arrived in 2023 and the Series 4 is the oldest model it supports.
While we can’t see the app yet at the time of writing, you’ll be able to download it on your Apple Watch (press the Digital Crown, then tap App Store) or your iPhone by going to the Watch app, going to the My Watch app, and scrolling to WhatsApp, before hitting install.
The news could be particularly exciting for owners of Apple Watch cellular models, as it opens up the possibility of using something similar to the iPhone’s WhatsApp experience while running, just without your phone.
