- Demon Hunters KPop 2 It is reportedly confirmed to go ahead.
- Netflix and Sony have signed an agreement that will allow the musical sequel to arrive in 2029
- In the meantime, fans can likely expect more spin-offs and shorts.
Demon Hunters KPop 2 It looks like it will definitely move forward, but fans of the demon hunting animation shouldn’t expect to see it on their screens anytime soon, as Netflix is reportedly eyeing a 2029 release date.
That’s according to Bloomberg, which reported that the world’s top streaming service had finally signed a sequel deal with the original film’s creators, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, and production company Sony.
A four-year wait may seem like a long time, but that’s a typical timeline for a major animated film when looking at past projects. For example, there was a five-year gap between the launch of Sony Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the latter of which became the studio’s highest-grossing animated film to date.
While Sony or Netflix have yet to confirm the news, it will almost certainly go ahead as the two entertainment giants have been confirmed to be discussing a deal for a sequel since August, so those talks have likely finally come to an end.
What can fans expect from a KPop Demon Hunters sequel?
Nobody needed a crystal ball to see that. KPop Demon Hunters would have a second act. The film has become Netflix’s most-watched film of all time and continues to rank among the most streamed titles on streaming platforms, not to mention the success of its soundtrack or its subsequent cultural prestige.
The film about a female pop trio who saves the world has such a large (and growing) fandom that not even Netflix was prepared for the overwhelming attention it has received, with the streamer reversing its adverse stance on theatrical releases by bringing a sing-along version of the megahit to the big screen and retailers scrambling to get their hands on merchandise inspired by the film.
Like the sequel, fans will have to wait until next year to see anything official. KPop Demon Hunters products (Netflix must be kicking itself with the arrival of Christmas), which should help maintain its popularity, but what will happen in the years after? Can fans expect to see any others? KPop Demon Hunters projects?
There is a high probability if the reports are anything to go by. According to his source, Bloomberg said that Netflix is already thinking about additional programming, such as a short film, to maintain KPop Demon Hunters in the ether.
From comments made by co-writer Kang in an interview with Variety earlier this year, a short film, spin-off, or TV show seems very likely and shouldn’t affect any ideas being considered for the sequel, as she already expressed that a lot was left on the table.
“We’ve set up a lot of things for a possible backstory,” Kang said. “Obviously, there are a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored, and we had to do that because there are only so many movies that can be told in 85 minutes.”
That could mean fans can expect several different prequel stories, focusing on other members of the fictional K-pop girl group Huntrix instead of just lead singer Rumi. Kang said that “we have backstories for Zoey and Mira, which we actually put in the movie, but he just turned them down. It just wasn’t the movie for those stories.”
