Co-founder of Rockstar and Red Dead Redemption 2 Writer Dan Houser believes that a third game will eventually be made, but admitted that he would be sad not to be involved in its development.
Speaking in a recent interview with podcaster Lex Fridman, Houser, who also has writing credits on almost all grand theft car game, shared his opinion on not being part of the long-awaited GTA 6 and any potential Red Dead Redemption sequel having left the company.
The developer agreed it would be bittersweet, but he’s also happy to do other things at his own studio, Absurd Ventures.
“Of course, letting go of something that I worked on in one form or another for about 20-odd years, and wrote about them for the last 10 or 11 that came out, wrote them all, or you know, the head writer on all of them, whatever it was… letting that go is a big change. And sad in a way,” Houser said.
Talking more about Red Dead RedemptionHouser explained that since his work on the first two titles was a “cohesive arc of two stories”, he would be sad not to be involved in the sequel if a third game was in the works.

Either way, Houser believes Rockstar will achieve Red Dead Redemption 3 one day.
“Because each of the [Grand Theft Auto] The games were kind of a standalone story, it’s not exactly the same thing as I think it would probably be sadder in some ways if someone continued. dead redbecause it was a cohesive two-game arc. Maybe it’s sadder to hear someone working on it. But again, that will probably happen too.
“I don’t own the intellectual property. That was part of the deal. It’s a privilege to work on things, but you don’t necessarily own them.”
Rockstar has not shared any plans for a third party dead red game, but we know that it is currently focused on grand theft car 6which will be released on May 26, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
In the same interview, Houser explained why there is so much fuss around grand theft car 6arguing that it is due to how Rockstar has handled the evolution of the IP.
