- Ring introduces single event alert for Premium subscribers
- The feature uses AI to consolidate the number of alerts you see
- When there is a lot of activity, you will only get a summary
One of the annoyances of setting up motion detection alerts on your home security camera is that you tend to get a barrage of unnecessary alerts all related to the same event, something Ring is now trying to address with a new AI-powered feature.
It’s called Single Event Alert and as the name suggests, it will group all motion alerts for the same event into a single notification. It could be children playing in the garden, for example, or a delivery man coming and going trying to find the right address.
The AI part is how your camera will be able to recognize that the same thing is happening multiple times (think of a gardener trimming hedges) and, in theory, will be smart enough to tell you just once.
“AI Single Event Alerting addresses one of the most common customer frustrations: notification fatigue,” Ring explains in its official blog post. “Constant alerts can make it difficult to concentrate and even more difficult to know what is urgent.”
‘Awareness and tranquility’

The problem with receiving too many alerts from security cameras is that you tend to ignore them or consider them a low priority. That means that when something big happens, it may take a while for you to notice.
Hopefully this will help address that notification overload – a “balance between awareness and peace of mind,” as Ring puts it. It joins two other AI features on the devices, video descriptions (summaries of what happened) and intelligent video search.
However, like those other AI features, the single event alert will only be available to Ring Premium subscribers. That will cost you $19.99 / £15.99 AU$29.95 a month, and for now it’s limited to users in the US and Canada.
It’s nice to see security cameras getting smarter, although it’s not so nice that this is another paid feature that prompts you to subscribe. You can find models with and without subscriptions attached in our guide to the best home security cameras.
