Eric Roberts has shared the secret of his three-decade marriage.
While crediting “honesty and intimacy” for the strength of his relationship with his partner Eliza Roberts, both on and off screen, the 69-year-old actor spoke about their bond in a chat with PEOPLE magazine at a special screening of A24’s new film, Eternity, at AMC Century City.
Chatting with his wife, who was also at the event, Eric reflected on their relationship that began in 1992.
Eric, nominated for an Oscar for runaway train and is the brother of Julia Roberts, he joked about the length of his union with Eliza: “It’s been 62 years.”
That made Eliza laugh and respond, “Oh, Eric, stop. It’s been over 30 years since 1992 and it’s crazy in Hollywood.”
Revealing the secret behind what kept them together for so long, Eric said: “It’s called honesty. It’s an overused word, so it doesn’t mean anything. But honesty is hard. Honesty and intimacy. You have both, you have them. But you have to have both.”
Eliza, who manages her husband’s acting career, said she has been working with him “since the beginning” of their relationship.
He added: “Since I’m in business anyway, I felt doing it at home was smart.”
Eric added: “It’s been amazing. I love my boss.”
Eliza explained the key to balancing her personal and professional life saying, “Listen, respect and then make sure someone has the final say, which is me.”
