In August and September, Joe Schmidt’s men dominated the Lions’ third Test to avoid a sweep and start the 2025 Rugby Championship with two out of three wins. However, since then they have lost four of five, with the only victory coming against beleaguered Japan, and they had to work hard to achieve it. With South Africa next up, match organizers haven’t exactly been kind to Italy, so it’s no surprise to see Gonzalo Quesada gaining plenty of experience at the Stadio Friuli. Even with Sebastián Negri and captain Michele Lamaro injured, all but three of their starting XV have at least 20 caps each. Among them are key men Ange Capuozzo, Paolo Garbisi and skipper of the day Juan Ignacio Brex, while Tommaso Allan remains in reserve.
Louis Lynagh, son of Wallabies great Michael Lynagh, will start for Italy in what will be his first appearance against Australia. His brother Tom Lynagh is unfortunately not in the squad after a recent hamstring injury.
