Former Intel software engineer Jinfeng Luo has been accused of stealing around 18,000 Intel files, including data labeled “Top Secret,” upon leaving the company, according to Mercury news.
Luo joined the company in 2014 and received a layoff notice in July 2024, but the company has since pursued the former worker with a lawsuit to recover his files.
The report claims that Luo had attempted to copy files a week before leaving, but was blocked by the company’s security measures.
Intel’s top secrets have been stolen
Despite the initial failure, Luo managed to transfer files to a network-attached storage device three days before departure.
Intel was said to have detected these transfers shortly after, before spending several months calling, emailing and sending letters to the former employee, but to no avail.
The company is now asking for $250,000 in damages as well as the return of all stolen files, a process it is already familiar with after another former employee was found guilty of illegally copying information before moving to Microsoft.
As of this writing, Luo is still missing and has not responded to any allegations.
TechRadar Pro We asked Intel for comment on the investigation and lawsuit, but did not receive an immediate response.
More broadly, Intel’s revenue is finally starting to increase as stock prices continue to move in the right direction. The company saw a 3% year-over-year increase in revenue last quarter after flat, flat and declining previous quarters.
Investors are also starting to see some returns: Shares are up 78% in three months, although the current valuation of $38.85 is still well below 2021 highs of nearly $70.
