‘I voted for the field marshal and today I came to vote for General Asim Munir’
ISLAMABAD:
PTI Senator Saifullah Abro on Monday announced his resignation after voting in favor of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, in violation of his party’s policy.
Listing out his reasons for voting in favor of the amendment that also seeks immunity for Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Abro, while speaking in the Senate, said India was facing global humiliation due to the Pakistan Army’s role in the India-Pakistan confrontation in May this year.
“No one has ever shown the kind of respect [US] President [Donald] Trump showed it to the quarterback. “I voted for the field marshal and I came today to vote for General Asim Munir,” he said.
Abro said that during the passage of the 26th Constitutional Amendment in October last year, ten members of his family were kidnapped. “What did my party do to raise its voice for me after that?” asked. He then announced that he will resign from his Senate seat.
Hearing his announcement, Senate President Yousaf Raza Gillani commented: “Senator Saifullah Abro has resigned, but we will appoint him senator again.”
Earlier, following Abro’s vote against the party’s policy on the 27th Constitutional Amendment, the PTI decided to initiate action against him under Article 63-A of the Constitution.
PTI Senator Ali Zafar said Saifullah Abro was now disqualified.
“We will file a complaint against him before the Election Commission. [of Pakistan]. As parliamentary leader, he had ordered all senators not to vote. Saifullah Abro violated party discipline and voted in favor of the government,” he added.
