- Active Pulse will test autonomously and generate a report with suggested actions
- The next Continuous Pulse will identify baselines and intermittent problems
- Two out of three homes had Wi-Fi problems last year
Ookla has revealed a new diagnostic device for ISPs and businesses to help them identify bottlenecks in Internet connections.
Speedtest Pulse will generate actionable recommendations and a performance report automatically in ‘Active Pulse’ mode after a network check.
Ookla, the company behind the popular speedtest.net tool, says Pulse will put an end to costly repeat visits and help providers demonstrate the quality of connectivity to users.
In addition to the one-time checks covered by ‘Active Pulse’, Ookla also plans to launch ‘Continuous Pulse’ in 2026, which uses the “leave behind” principle to perform continuous tracking. This will be better to detect intermittent problems, establish baselines and therefore avoid repeat visits.
“While service providers offer impressive speeds in the home, the quality of the customer experience is limited by the performance of Wi-Fi in the home,” explained Stephen Bye, CEO of Ookla.
More than two-thirds (68%) of households reported Wi-Fi issues over the past year, Ookla noted.
To date, techies have been limited to “overly simple applications” or “cost-prohibitive expert systems,” so Ookla hopes the Speedtest Pulse will fit well into that gap.
Senior Vice President of Engineering Anssi Tauriainen also criticized existing tools for providing too much raw data and not enough actionable insights: “We created Speedtest Pulse to be the expert in your pocket, translating complex RF data and performance metrics into actionable recommendations.”
The device can connect over Wi-Fi or Gigabit Ethernet to test networks, either drawing power from USB-C or Power over Ethernet.
Ookla hasn’t shared details on pricing and availability yet, but with its emphasis on accessibility for techies, we have high hopes.
