A Women’s Champions League match was marred by harrowing scenes when Atletico Madrid defender Andrea Medina was rushed to hospital after suffering a traumatic brain injury.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, November 12, when the 21-year-old Spanish left back collapsed on the pitch after a collision with Juventus star Barbara Bonansea.

The soccer match was played between Atlético and Juventus at the Alcalá de Henares Sports Center.

Medina collapsed and remained on the ground for a long time, unconscious, for which he was urgently treated by club staff before being carried on a stretcher and taken by ambulance to a hospital.

English broadcaster Jacqui Oatley, commentating on the match, described the atmosphere as “horrible”.

Later, on his social media, he posted: “We wish him all the best and hope he is well.”

After the match, Atlético Madrid released an official update on the player’s condition stating that Medina has suffered a “traumatic brain injury” and is now “fine.”

She is currently transferred to a hospital to undergo additional testing as a precautionary measure.

Medina began his senior career at Real Betis before moving to Atlético Madrid in 2022. He is now under close medical supervision.
