Why Apple AirPods 4 rule the school
In our review of the AirPods 4, our main issue was the price: at $129 we felt they were overpriced compared to their rivals. But less than $85? That’s a completely different story, because they are a huge improvement over the previous generation.
As always with AirPods, you’ll get the best out of them if you’re integrated into the Apple ecosystem: their best features are exclusive to Apple technology. As we said in our review, that offers a great experience: “The spatial audio with head tracking is so impressive with movies, the automatic device switching between Apple technology is really useful, and overall it’s a seamless experience.”
We really like the automatic switching between different Apple devices, because we constantly switch from Mac to iPad to iPhone and, as the ad’s tagline says, it just works.
The sound is very good for this type of fit: the AirPods, unlike their Pro siblings, sit outside the ear canal rather than inside, giving you better awareness of the world around you but losing a bit of bass. However, the AirPods 4 still feel complete and impactful.
And spatial audio with head tracking is really good in TV shows and movies, offering a real home theater effect without making you unpopular with your neighbors.
As you’d expect, there’s support for Siri and Find My too, and new gesture controls let you confirm things like “do you want to record an outdoor walk” with a nod or reject calls with a nod. And the microphone quality is good for making voice and video calls.
