- YouTube TV and Disney have resolved their differences
- Disney Channels Now Returning to YouTube TV
- The two companies have signed a new multi-year agreement
After a rather vexing two-week dispute over payments, all Disney-owned content is returning to YouTube TV subscribers, including ABC, ESPN, FX, National Geographic, and other Disney-branded channels.
If you’re one of the 10 million people signed up for YouTube TV, these channels should be appearing again very soon, if they haven’t already. Previous library recordings will also be restored under the new agreement.
Other parts of the Disney-YouTube partnership may take a little longer to restore. As part of the previous expiring content deal, the ability to purchase Disney movies and shows on YouTube was removed, a block that 9to5Google says is still in effect at this time.
Presumably that functionality will also be restored over time. Terms of the new deal have not been revealed by either Disney or YouTube TV, but now the two appear to be friends again after neither side really benefited from the blackout drama.
‘Preserve the value of our service’
Both companies have offered optimistic press statements. YouTube TV says the deal “preserves the value of our service for our subscribers and the future flexibility of our offerings,” as well as apologizing for the disruption and thanking subscribers for their patience.
Disney says the new “multi-year distribution agreement” reflects the “exceptional entertainment” the company can offer YouTube TV subscribers and “recognizes the tremendous value of Disney programming.”
In fact, the press releases are so full of positivity that it’s hard to believe there was ever a problem. YouTube TV had begun offering money back to subscribers who ran out of any Disney content.
YouTube TV previously accused Disney of trying to “force settlement terms that would increase prices on our customers,” while Disney suggested that YouTube TV had been using its market dominance to avoid paying fair rates for Disney channels.
