It’s retro, cheap, and now personal: The charming screenless Camp Snap compact camera has evolved since I was impressed by the original from 2023. This time, in preparation for the holidays, its creators have added a customization service that adds even more appeal to the retro point-and-shoot style.
Choose a camera body color, a text color, and then personalize your Camp Snap with up to 10 characters (letters only). Unique gift made. I was going to buy a soccer jersey for one of my sons with the name on the back, but now I’m pushed in another direction!
I bought an original Camp Snap (in black) in 2023 and still have it today. It’s a perfectly executed lo-fi concept that rode the retro camera wave and deservedly holds a spot as the top pick for kids in my guide to the best point-and-shoot cameras, especially since it’s screenless and super cheap.
It’s basically a digital version of the single-use film camera, so don’t have high hopes for quality, with USB-C connectivity and room for 2,000 8MP photos. However, its simple retro design, which does not include a screen, is super refreshing. Shoot now, look later.
Camp Snap is the lo-fi concept that keeps getting better
It was already possible to buy the original Camp Snap in a variety of color combinations – many styles have come and gone over the past two years and there are currently 12 eye-catching versions on the brand’s website.
But adding a name to the camera? It’s such a clever gift idea that I expect it to be extremely popular for the upcoming holidays, especially for the super reasonable price of $85/£66 at Camp Snap. For context, the original non-custom version costs $70 / £52 at Camp Snap.
It’s been a good time for cheap cameras – the new Kodak Charmera keychain camera is a solid alternative for just $30/£30. You can’t personalize it, but it comes in a mystery box so you don’t know which of the six retro designs you’ll get.
Between Camp Snap and Kodak, we have two cameras in operation that are novel gift options for camera lovers. I feel like I can skip the Black Friday sales and buy them at full price because they’re already so cheap, and that makes me happy!
