Bill Belichick had a one-word explanation for his frosty interaction with Wake Forest head coach Jake Dickert following North Carolina’s 28-12 loss to the Demon Deacons over the weekend.

Belichick’s cold interaction followed a brutal loss in which the Tar Heels failed to find the end zone for all four quarters and ended with a final 2-yard fourth-down touchdown by Robby Ashford with just 22 seconds left.

“We just didn’t have a good night and it certainly wasn’t enough here,” Belichick said clearly during the postgame press conference. “We’ll get back to work this week and see if we can get back on track. We’re a better team than we were tonight. We just weren’t very good.”

But it was Belichick’s handshake (or lack thereof) with Dickert after the game that drew heavy criticism.

Video shared on social media showed Dickert running toward the center of the field. As he approached the legendary NFL coach, Dickert took off his cap to shake hands with Belichick, who apparently ran past him toward the locker room.

“This is a horrible look for Bill Belichick,” one person wrote on social media. “When you fill the space that Bill fills, you have to recognize what these games mean to opposing coaches.”

“He’s not very athletic,” added another.

When asked about the postgame handshake and what the two coaches said, Belichick simply responded, “Congratulations.”
