Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin did not go into detail with reporters Tuesday about his opinion on Jalen Ramsey’s ejection from Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. However, he did offer an insightful statement about how someone should react in that situation.
Ramsey was ejected in the fourth quarter of the AFC North showdown after he appeared to grab Chase’s mask and punch him. Tensions had been rising between the two respective stars, and after the game, Ramsey accused Chase of spitting on him, which led to him getting physical.

Tomlin told reporters Tuesday that he was aware of Ramsey’s allegation. He declined to comment on the NFL’s decision to suspend Chase for one game.

“I was aware. I certainly talked to Jalen in the game; it’s an unfortunate incident. It’s not a common act in football, it has nothing to do with football,” Tomlin said. “And that’s why I’m not going to comment on it. The NFL office ruled on it and we’ll move forward.”
When pressed later about his messages to Ramsey, Tomlin didn’t offer much. But he did make his position on Ramsey’s reaction to the spitting incident pretty clear.
“I have no message if someone spits in your face. Do what comes naturally to you.”

Chase denied spitting, but video evidence proved otherwise. According to the league, the star catcher violated Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which applies to “any act that is contrary to generally understood principles of sportsmanship.”
Chase’s suspension will reportedly cost him a gameday salary of $448,333, as well as an active bonus of $58,823 per game.
