Showroom owners and merchants attacked by gangs

Law enforcement has launched raids across the city following a rise in extortion incidents. The investigation into the shooting at a car showroom on New MA Jinnah Road is underway.

Investigators revealed that the suspects involved in the New MA Jinnah Road incident used cell phone services instead of social media platforms to issue threats. The group fired shots into the showroom before sending a text message via SMS.

The message read, “This is a trailer. If you don’t pay 5 million rupees by 7 pm, the full movie will start.”

After targeting builders, the extortionists have turned their attention to showroom owners. Traders, builders and showroom owners have reported receiving calls from national and international numbers. Authorities suspect the involvement of a gang led by Ahmed Ali Magsi.

Separately, the Rangers arrested an alleged extortionist, Qasim alias Qaso, yesterday in Malir. He was wanted for several cases of extortion and targeted murders. The Special Investigation Unit is questioning the suspect.

The police have recently received multiple complaints about the resurgence of extortion in the metropolis. In Malir district, a food center owner received a call from an international number demanding Rs 2 million as “party fund”. Malir city police have registered a case.

In another incident yesterday, a Manghopir trader was slapped with an extortion demand of Rs 100 million.
